Quick answer: Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) removes excess eyelid skin and fat; a brow lift raises a brow that has dropped and is crowding the eyelid. Many people who think they need eyelid surgery actually need a brow lift, or both. Most patients stay in Cancun about 7–10 days for suture removal and follow-up; your surgeon will confirm based on your case.

Key facts

  • 120,755 eyelid surgeries were performed in the U.S. in 2024, making it one of the most common cosmetic operations. (ASPS 2024 Procedural Statistics)

  • Forehead and brow lifts grew 29% in 2025, one of the fastest-growing procedures in the U.S. (ASPS, 2025 report)

  • Eyelid stitches are typically removed 5–7 days after surgery, and bruising may last 2–4 weeks. (MedlinePlus, NIH)

  • Most brow lift patients return to work within about one week after endoscopic surgery, or about two weeks after other techniques. (ASPS)

  • Medicare covers upper eyelid or brow surgery only when it’s functional, such as documented visual field loss of at least 12 degrees. (CMS)

What causes heavy, tired-looking upper eyes?

Heavy upper eyes usually come from two changes happening at once: excess eyelid skin and a brow that has descended. With age, skin loses elasticity and folds over the lash line, fat can bulge through weakened tissue, and the brow itself drops, pushing more skin down onto the lid.

The ASPS lists loose, sagging upper-lid skin, puffy fat deposits, under-eye bags, and drooping lower lids as the concerns eyelid surgery treats. What it doesn’t list is a low brow, and that’s where many patients get confused.

Significant weight loss can accelerate the same pattern by deflating the temples and upper face. If that’s your situation, the broader picture is covered in Ozempic Face: Why a Facelift—Not More Filler—Is Often the Real Fix.

What’s the difference between a brow lift and eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery treats the eyelid; a brow lift treats the brow and forehead above it. They’re neighbors, and the ASPS notes the upper eyelid and brow are so closely intertwined that patients pointing to their eyelids often need a brow lift as well.

  • Upper blepharoplasty: The surgeon removes excess skin, and sometimes fat, through an incision hidden in the natural eyelid crease.

  • Lower blepharoplasty: Addresses under-eye bags and loose lower-lid skin, through an incision below the lashes or inside the lid.

  • Brow lift: Raises and repositions the eyebrows and smooths the forehead. It can make the upper lid look like it has less excess skin without removing any.

Here’s the trap: if your brow has dropped and a surgeon removes eyelid skin without addressing it, the brow can end up even lower, and the result can look heavy or angry rather than refreshed.

How do I know if I need a brow lift, eyelid surgery, or both?

Try this mirror test. Relax your forehead completely and look straight ahead. Then place your fingertips just above your eyebrows and gently lift them to where they sat when you were younger.

  • If lifting the brows clears most of the eyelid hooding, a brow lift may be the main fix.

  • If there’s still excess skin on the lid after lifting, you likely need eyelid surgery.

  • If both are true, a combined procedure is common.

Another clue: if you constantly raise your eyebrows to see better, your brow may be compensating for heavy lids. Only an in-person exam can confirm it.

What brow lift techniques are there?

The main techniques differ by where the incisions go and how much of the brow they lift. According to the ASPS:

  • Endoscopic brow lift: Three to five short incisions hidden behind the hairline, using a small camera. Usually the quickest recovery.

  • Temporal brow lift: A 2- to 3-inch incision on each side of the temporal hairline, lifting the outer brow, where drooping often shows first.

  • Open (coronal or hairline) brow lift: A longer incision across the scalp or at the hairline, lifting the entire brow and forehead. Often considered for patients with a high hairline or tall forehead.

The right choice depends on your hairline, forehead height, and how much lift you need.

Can brow and eyelid surgery be combined with a facelift?

Yes. Upper face procedures are frequently combined with a facelift, because a facelift addresses the lower two-thirds of the face and a brow lift the upper third. Combining means one anesthesia and one recovery, though a longer operation and a longer stay.

What is recovery like after brow lift and eyelid surgery?

Most patients feel comfortable in public after about two weeks, with swelling settling over several months. MedlinePlus advises keeping activity to a minimum for 3–5 days after eyelid surgery, avoiding strenuous activity for about 3 weeks, and notes bruising may last 2–4 weeks.

For a brow lift, the ASPS describes swelling and bruising in the first week, sutures removed in weeks one to two, a gradual return to strenuous activity by 6–12 weeks, and final results emerging at 3–6 months.

Common, usually temporary effects include dry or irritated eyes, which the ASPS notes are managed with cold compresses and ointment, plus scalp numbness or itching after a brow lift. Rarer risks include difficulty closing the eyes fully and, very rarely, vision problems. Wear dark sunglasses outdoors; Cancun’s sun is strong.

Is eyelid surgery ever covered by insurance?

Sometimes, when it’s done to improve vision rather than appearance. Medicare’s coverage policy for blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery, and brow lift requires documented functional problems, such as a visual field improvement of at least 12 degrees when the lid is lifted, and states that procedures performed only to improve appearance aren’t covered.

If your lids are affecting your vision, get a visual field test at home first. It clarifies whether your case is functional, cosmetic, or both.

What to ask any surgeon before brow or eyelid surgery

  1. Are you board-certified in plastic surgery, and by which board? (In Mexico, look for CMCPER certification; oculoplastic surgeons are certified in ophthalmology.)

  2. Is my issue the eyelid, the brow, or both? Please show me in the mirror.

  3. Which brow lift technique do you recommend, and why?

  4. Do I have dry eye or any condition that changes the plan?

  5. How many of these procedures do you perform each year?

  6. Is the facility accredited, and what anesthesia will I have?

  7. When are stitches removed, and how long should I stay before flying?

  8. Who follows up with me after I’m home?

How does brow lift and eyelid surgery in Cancun work for U.S. and Canadian patients?

  1. Case review before you book anything. You share relaxed, straight-on photos, eye history, and any visual field tests.

  2. Surgeon match and plan, including which procedures fit your anatomy.

  3. Pre-operative clearance on arrival: labs and anesthesia review.

  4. Surgery, usually outpatient.

  5. Local recovery of about 7–10 days, including suture removal before you fly.

  6. Remote follow-up after you’re home.

At My Medical Vacations, we don’t operate on anyone. We’re an independent coordinator: we evaluate your case, match you with a board-certified specialist suited to your anatomy, and manage the full journey with bilingual nursing support before, during, and after surgery. In 16 years we’ve coordinated more than 8,000 cases.

Frequently asked questions

Can a brow lift fix hooded eyelids? Often, if the hooding comes from a low brow. If excess skin remains after the brow is lifted, eyelid surgery may also be needed.

How long do eyelid surgery results last? Usually many years, and permanent for some people. Aging continues, but from a refreshed baseline.

Will I look surprised after a brow lift? A well-planned brow lift aims for a natural brow position, not an overly raised one. Ask your surgeon how they plan brow height and shape.

How long should I stay in Cancun after brow or eyelid surgery? Most patients stay about 7–10 days, until sutures are removed and a follow-up is done. Your surgeon will confirm based on your case.

When can I wear contact lenses and makeup again? Your surgeon will advise, usually once incisions have healed. Many patients use glasses for the first weeks.

Can injectables replace a brow lift? Neuromodulators can raise the brow slightly for a few months, but they don’t remove skin or reposition tissue.

Why are patients traveling to Cancun for upper face surgery? Access to board-certified surgeons experienced in facial rejuvenation, shorter waits, and coordinated recovery. The key is the right surgeon, not the lowest price.
