Quick answer: Waits for hernia repair and gallbladder removal in Canada vary widely by province, from a few weeks to many months after seeing a surgeon. While you wait, you can ask to join a short-notice list, request a referral to a surgeon with a shorter queue, or explore care outside your province or abroad. Check provincial coverage rules first.
Key facts
-
The median wait from GP referral to treatment in Canada was 28.6 weeks in 2025, across 12 specialties. (Fraser Institute, Waiting Your Turn 2025)
-
General surgery patients waited a median of 20.8 weeks from referral to treatment, including 10.2 weeks after seeing the specialist. Surgeons surveyed considered about 6.3 weeks clinically reasonable for that second segment. (Fraser Institute)
-
Median waits after the specialist visit for hernia repair ranged from 3.5 weeks (P.E.I.) to 48 weeks (Quebec); for gallbladder removal, from 3.5 to 34 weeks. (Fraser Institute)
-
CIHI’s national benchmark reporting doesn’t include hernia or gallbladder surgery; it tracks procedures such as hip and knee replacement, cataract surgery, and cancer surgery. (CIHI, 2025)
-
Ontario requires written prior approval for OHIP to fund planned treatment outside Canada. (Ontario.ca)
How long are the waits for hernia and gallbladder surgery in Canada?
Waits depend heavily on where you live. The Fraser Institute’s 2025 Waiting Your Turn report, based on a national survey of specialists, found that general surgery patients waited a median of 20.8 weeks from GP referral to treatment: about 10.5 weeks to see a surgeon and 10.2 weeks from that consultation to surgery. (Fraser Institute)
The provincial spread is wide. Total general surgery waits ranged from 11.6 weeks in Prince Edward Island to 46.6 weeks in New Brunswick. After the specialist visit:

These figures come from physician surveys, and CIHI measures wait times differently for a smaller set of priority procedures, so treat them as a guide rather than a prediction for your case. Canada’s system is also working to recover: CIHI reports 26% more hip replacements and 7% more cancer surgeries in 2024 than in 2019. (CIHI)
Is it safe to wait for hernia surgery?
For many men with a hernia that causes few or no symptoms, waiting is considered safe. A randomized trial of 720 men with minimally symptomatic inguinal hernias found that watchful waiting was an acceptable option: acute incarceration (a trapped hernia) occurred at a rate of about 1.8 per 1,000 patient-years. About 23% of men in the waiting group chose surgery within two years, mostly because pain increased. (JAMA, 2006)
The catch is quality of life. A hernia that limits work, exercise, or sleep, or that keeps growing, is a different situation. And a hernia that becomes suddenly painful, firm, and can’t be pushed back in is an emergency: go to the nearest emergency department. Our guide Hernia Repair in Mexico: Laparoscopic vs. Open Surgery, Recovery, and When You Can Fly Home explains the surgical options.
Is it safe to wait for gallbladder surgery?
Gallstones are common and often silent. The NIDDK estimates they affect 10 to 15% of the U.S. population, and most never cause blockages or pain. (NIDDK) Once stones cause symptoms, though, attacks tend to recur, and some people develop complications such as inflammation of the gallbladder, blocked bile ducts, or pancreatitis.
That’s why waiting with symptomatic gallstones is a conversation to have with your surgeon, not a default. Diet changes may reduce attacks for some people. Severe pain lasting several hours, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine needs emergency care immediately. For what surgery itself involves, see Gallbladder Removal in Mexico: What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery.
What are your options while you wait?
You have more options than most patients realize. Many are inside the Canadian system:
-
Ask to be on a short-notice cancellation list. In the Fraser survey, specialists estimated that 40.7% of their patients would accept surgery within a week if an opening came up.
-
Ask your family doctor about a surgeon with a shorter queue. Some provinces use pooled or single-entry referrals that send you to the next available surgeon.
-
Ask about care in another province, and check your plan’s rules first.
-
Consider treatment abroad for a stable, non-emergency case, with a clear plan for records and follow-up at home.
According to the Fraser report, about 2.1% of Canadian patients received their treatment outside the country in 2024/25.
Will my provincial health plan cover surgery abroad?
Usually not unless you have prior approval. Ontario, for example, states that you must get written prior approval from the Ministry of Health before receiving planned out-of-country services, and that you’ll be responsible for all costs without it. (Ontario.ca) Other provinces have their own rules, so contact your provincial plan before you commit. Without approval, you pay privately, so also check insurance for complications.
How long should I stay in Cancun after hernia or gallbladder surgery?
For a laparoscopic hernia repair or gallbladder removal, plan about 7 to 10 days in Cancun. The CDC advises waiting about 10 days after chest or abdominal surgery before flying because surgery and long flights both raise blood-clot risk. (CDC Yellow Book) Your surgeon will confirm based on your case and the technique used.
SAGES notes that most people return to normal activity about a week after laparoscopic gallbladder removal. (SAGES)
What to ask any surgeon before hernia or gallbladder surgery
-
Are you board-certified in general surgery, and by which board? (In Mexico, look for certification by the Consejo Mexicano de Cirugía General.)
-
Do you recommend laparoscopic or open surgery for me, and why?
-
How many of these procedures do you perform each year?
-
For hernia repair, what type of mesh do you use, and will I get the product details in writing?
-
Where will surgery take place, and is the hospital accredited?
-
When is it safe for me to fly home?
-
Will I receive my operative report in English for my family doctor?
